Bitten Recap 'Prodigal'

Image from Bitten, streamed via Netflix
Season 1 Episode 2

The second episode of Bitten delved more into the show’s mythology. We were already shown that werewolves had super hearing, and needed to eat a lot. Now, we were told via Nick that werewolves also had prolonged youth. With Elena’s comment that their old age would also be prolonged, I took that to mean that werewolves age, but very slowly. Packs create and enforce the rules on mutts. Werewolves were prohibited from changing in front of  humans and killing humans, unless the change occurred in front of a human. The only way a woman could become a werewolf was to be bitten. According to the lore, it was long thought that women were not strong enough to handle the change (*grits teeth*). Elena was the only woman known to have survived the bite.

It was Pete who told Elena all about the werewolf history. Pete came whenever Jeremy called, because Jeremy saved his life. Years ago, Pete was strung out on drugs, changed in front of a girl, and killed her. It was Jeremy who handled everything, though he was not alpha at the time.

Four years ago, Elena was just a girl in love with Clay. Clay took her to Stonehaven to introduce her to his family. How that introduction went, we were not yet shown. After Elena helped track the still unnamed mutt to his home, however, she asked Jeremy if she could leave, though they have not caught the mutt yet.

Elena was adamantly against killing, even the mutt who had already killed, because, a year ago, when she killed a bounty hunter who threatened to expose werewolves, she felt that she lost her humanity. Jeremy showed himself not to be a dictator when he agreed that Elena could go back to Toronto. Before she could leave, however, the pack found the remains of a boy in the Stonehaven woods. Hunters, eager for the bounty for catching the wolf, were already on their way.

In Prodigal, we were shown an Elena to whom the pull of Stonehaven and Clay remained strong, but who remained determined to live her normal life in Toronto with Philip. Pete warned her it was dangerous to try to be human. To live the werewolf life, however, appeared equally dangerous.

Strays

■ Elena appeared pissed that Clay did not look for her in the one year that she had been away from Stonehaven. Clay said he was under orders from Jeremy to leave her alone.

■ There was a nice scene of Elena versus Nick and Nick versus Clay on the grounds of Stonehaven. Jeremy looked happy to see his pack together again.

■ Jeremy made his living as a painter. I liked a couple of the paintings that were part of the set.

■ I do not paint, but a painter living a quiet life in a mansion sounds ideal to me.

■ Maintaining the secrecy of the werewolf kind was the foremost rule.

■ Zachary Cain was a mutt Clay had a run in a few months ago, and needed to be added to the pack sh t list.

■ Jeremy’s father Malcolm Danvers was a mutt. Malcolm may have been alpha before Jeremy. According to Jeremy, Malcolm died eight months ago.

■ Daniel Santos was another mutt with a grudge against the pack. Daniel’s brother was killed by Clay, and he was excommunicated.

■ Elena said the mutt who has been killing smelled newly turned. Jeremy wanted the mutt alive so he could be questioned. Jeremy wanted to know who has been turning humans into werewolves.

■ Surviving a werewolf bite was difficult and rare. There was also a high suicide rate even amongst those who survived the bite.

■ Jose Carter promised proof of a werewolf. What he had was a human arm in the middle of a werewolf transformation. He refused Elena’s offer of money. What he wanted was for the highest bidder to come with him to Ecuador to capture the now armless werewolf, so he would tell them where the other werewolves were. He and Elena got into a fight, and Elena tore his heart out.
