Bitten Recap 'Grief'

Image from Bitten, streamed via Netflix
Season 1 Episode 4

Karl Marsten, international mutt of mystery, and Zachary Cain, the mutt that Clay beat up months ago, appeared to be turning murderers into werewolves. Three were mentioned to have escaped a prison facility in Tennessee. We already met two, the mutt who killed the women and one child, and the mutt who killed Pete.

Elena and Clay tracked the second mutt down to a motel room, where they also found trophies from his previous victims as a human. When Karl and Zachary arrived, Elena and Clay were outnumbered and had to hide. Karl knew their scents, however. When Elena and Clay returned with Nick and Jeremy, the motel room was empty. There was a message scrawled on the wall, clearly meant for Elena, and Pete’s finger on a glass with his ring still on it.

Logan was back in Toronto because of a psychology conference. Daniel Santos, also a mutt on the pack’s sh t list, arrived at his door. Daniel wanted to join forces with the Danvers clan against the mutts. He reminded Logan that before his exile, he was pure pack. His great great grandfather used to be alpha. I am glad that we are now meeting the people whose names were dropped early in the series.

Grief pushed the momentum forward with the reveal of the werewolves behind the newly turned mutts. It was interesting to note that Bitten was a show centred on the only woman known to have survived the werewolf bite, and here were newly turned mutts, at least two of them in jail for crimes against women when they were human.

As for Elena, she was fine for most of the episode, except for a couple of scenes early on when the writing did not serve her that well. The whole pack was hurting, but Elena made Pete’s death about herself (she lost her parents when she was five years old). She was frustrated, she wanted to go home to Toronto, she did not want to be in the werewolf world that was filled with death, but she also called Jeremy complacent and wanted to see him avenge Pete’s death. She said she did not belong in Stonehaven yet she was secure enough in her place in Jeremy’s affections to know that he would react with more anger if she were the one who was killed. Mixed emotions for Elena was understandable, but the writing for her was all over the place, until she and Clay went out to track the mutt. The show is centred on Elena so it would be nice if the writing for her did not go off key too often.

Strays

■ Clay and Elena went for a run in the property. Later, naked and human again, they kissed briefly.

■ Nick to Clay: ‘Hey listen. I don’t mind when Elena romps around the house naked but please, put some clothes on. Okay, you’re making Logan here feel inadequate.’ Logan: ‘Don’t displace your own insecurities onto me.’

■ Antonio’s father used to be alpha

■ Jeremy tasked Antonio to take care of Pete’s disappearance, and to reach out to the other packs. If the mutt issue was only directed at Stonehaven, then it was meant to unseat Jeremy.

■ Antonio pretended to be an FBI agent investigating Pete. The tour manager, Win, called Pete’s cell and advised him to go travelling. It was Antonio’s way of making sure Pete’s human friends would not go around looking for him.

■ The sheriff was suspicious that someone was against the Danvers, because the body of the boy was dumped within Stonehaven grounds.

■ The sheriff went to the old sheriff to ask about the Danvers. The old sheriff recalled one incident when a telephone worker disappeared whilst working on the property. There were rumours that he saw something he should not have at Stonehaven.

■ The hunter Braxton, and his dog, were missing. The townsfolk were still suspicious of the Danvers.
