This is the episode that contained the now famous scything scene --- a shirtless Aidan Turner on the fields with a scythe, working whilst Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) watched. It is a good thing that this episode contained many scenes fans like myself would love because in between lingering looks from Ross to Demelza was the tragic story of young Jim Carter.
Jim used to work in the mines but because of his asthma, Ross gave him a job as a farmhand. Ross also allowed him to use a cottage for free so he could marry the pregnant Jinny. Jim had to look after his mother and sisters, however, so Ross's generosity was not enough. Jim took to poaching, a crime punishable by death. Ross meant to offer Jim a job as head purser of the newly reopened Wheal Leisure but before he could do so, Jim was caught and sent to trial.
In the eyes of the magistrate, the sentence of two years in prison following Ross's appeal for leniency was an act of mercy. Ross, however, worried that two years in jail was a death sentence to Jim, whose health was fragile. Ross later regretted the fact that he lost his temper with the judges, when grovelling might have been more effective.
Already in a dark mood, Ross came home and found Demelza wearing a fancy dress from one of the boxes in his office. When Ross threatened to send her home to her father, Demelza broke down in tears. Demelza's father had come to Nampara to ask her to return with him. People across villages, peasants and the gentry alike, have been talking of an improper relationship between Ross and Demelza. Ross, after all, was an unmarried man, and Demelza was a beautiful, unmarried young woman.
Though Ross tried to stop their growing closeness and broke their kiss, Demelza made the decision that they become lovers. Momentarily happy with her man, Elizabeth's visit the following day reminded Demelza of the social gulf between them, and the fact that Ross still loved another. Demelza tried to return to her father but was stopped by Ross, who agreed that she could no longer be his servant. Instead, in front of a stunned Jud and Prudie, Ross and Demelza got married.

■ Random thought whilst watching this episode --- When I grow up, I want some form of art painted on the walls of my house.
■ Poor Verity is still miserable.
■ Aunt Agatha to Ross: 'Have we been introduced? I seem to recall you're related to me.' Aunt Agatha is the best.
